While they had rescued Saturn Knight from the Dark Alliance, it had been Saariyah that they had been trying to free. The purification was moving forward, the first of many steps to put things to rights and bring the Planetary Knights back into the fold where they belonged, but it was not the steps that Jeremiah wished they had made. (Truthfully, until they rescued Saariyah and saw the corruption--and destruction; he knew it was there now--purified from her Sailor Crystal, he would not be able to truly relent.)

For all that there were other things that could be done, more steps that might help them bring Saariyah and the other Planetary Knights home sooner, Jeremiah knew that he had to make sure he was taking care of himself. It meant that he made sure to not work late into the night, even though he did not require as much sleep as others did. It also meant that he made sure and ate healthy, though that often resulted in cooking for others as well (Lucy and Jeremiah had worked out an arrangement of sorts where either they coordinated who cooked what time or they cooked meals together).

Overall it was essentially Jeremiah putting forth the effort to practice better self-care (especially considering he expected those close to him to do the same; being a hypocrite did not suit him well) all because of one reason: Sevik. Oh, he had not promised exactly this--as Jeremiah did not like making promises in general as they essentially bound him to his word--but it was the sentiment of the promise. He would do better and not let himself be overtaken by compulsive and otherwise behaviors that he exhibited when stressed and pushing himself. After all: it was the least he could do to ensure that Sevik did not worry unduly (or anyone else for that matter).

Thus it had led to a ritual of sorts--habit if one wanted to phrase it another way--that Sevik (more often than not) ended up within his suite for the night as they wound down for the evening. Sometimes Luna (in her feline form) would make an appearance, Artemis occasionally with her, but mostly it was just Sevik. It was old and familiar for them and another, from the outside, might have presumed things about both of them for all that that was not the case. (It was a line that had not been crossed, after all; realization was not quite there for all that Jeremiah would freely admit that he loved Sevik dearly and could not imagine his life without the older man.) They would go through the motions, simply enjoying one another's company, and when the time came to rest ...

Well, there was no point in Sevik leaving for his own suite when sharing a bed was not a problem. In fact, it often helped ease each other's rest--after all, Sevik's presence while Jeremiah had been kept asleep for those four days following Saariyah's kidnapping and corruption was one of the few things that had helped ease his rest--and kept nightmares at bay.

At least, it usually did.

Jeremiah could not say what it was that woke him first--the way that Sevik tensed in his sleep or the sharp inhale of breath that was held in his chest--but he woke all the same as the other man was clearly caught in the throes of a nightmare. How bad it would become, the silver-haired man could not say, but he was already sitting up in bed and reaching for the other.

"Sevik," said Jeremiah, voice heavy with sleep even as he was properly waking up (low blood pressure made waking so problematic sometimes). "Sevik."

As much as Sevik didn’t want to admit it, dealing with Saturn Knight between the debriefing and their other conversation, messed Sevik up almost as much as losing Saariyah had affected Jeremiah. It helped to know that Jeremiah was sticking to what he said about not pushing himself too hard. There was still so much that needed to be done and there was still pressure on all of them to keep going, to keep doing and to make things work, but Sevik was glad Jeremiah was putting more effort into setting boundaries instead of trying to do everything himself. It made Sevik try a little harder in that respect, too. They hadn’t promised each other to take it easy, but they had promised to be there for each other and that carried a lot of weight in Sevik’s priorities.

After his conversation with Saturn Knight, Sevik headed to Jeremiah’s suite, which had become his habit lately. It started out as him just checking to be certain that Jeremiah didn’t overdo it. It seemed to help Sevik as well, plus he found he rather enjoyed having the extra time with Jeremiah. Not that he thought time with Jeremiah ever went badly or had times when he didn’t want to be around Jeremiah, but the more he went to Jeremiah’s suite in the evenings, the more he looked forward to it, especially on a night like tonight when everything seemed to weigh on him.

Of course, spending time in Jeremiah’s suite had led to him ending up in Jeremiah’s bed. It never went beyond cuddling, but that was never a problem. It’s not like they hadn’t shared a bed before. It wasn’t unusual for one to appear in the other’s bed at some point during the night. They both leaned on the other for emotional support when the nightmares got overwhelming. Sharing a bed, knowing the other was right there beside them, helped even more by keeping the nightmares away.

Tonight was the exception. Between the briefing and the conversation with Saturn Knight, it triggered the memories of the memories he had from when he was corrupted. During more than one battle he used his empathic powers to make others feel pain and fear, and during his sleep, he relived it in his nightmares. He could feel all the pain he inflicted on them as clearly as if he were doing it right then.

He heard someone calling his name and woke with a start. Normally, he was a light sleeper, but occasionally when the nightmares took him, he often tensed, thrashed, or called out in his sleep without waking himself up. As his mind cleared and he realized it was a nightmare, he realized Jeremiah was staring down at him. He breathed out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. Warmth slid from the corners of his eyes, and it wasn’t until he brought his hand up and touched the wetness around his eyes that he realized he’d been crying. He must have started crying while he was dreaming.

Sevik sat up, his mind still more than a little foggy. The subject of his nightmare returned unbidden to his mind and a fresh wave of tears flooded down his cheeks. “S… Sorry.” He wanted to say more, but that was all he could get out for the time being. He buried his face in Jeremiah’s shoulder and pulled himself closer to his friend and teammate. He was close to a handful of people, but there wasn’t anyone else besides Jeremiah that he’d allow to see him cry like this.

It did not take long before Jeremiah recognized the signs of Sevik being caught within the throes of a nightmare. That, more than anything else, saw him properly wake up and not stay caught within the slow fog of grogginess. As much as he had no talents with empathy--at least, not the magical sort--he could guess the nature of what was plaguing Sevik's mind, especially with the thrashing and disturbed bedding.

With everything that had happened with Saturn Knight, it ultimately came as no surprise. Jeremiah could only imagine what ill thoughts and memories surfaced, though clearly, it was the kind that left Sevik with a fine tremble and his eyes watering with tears. Yet it was when the older man realized his tears--a hand touching them--that Jeremiah saw him buckle. Immediately, the silver-haired man reached for Sevik, an arm wrapping around him even as the other man's face hid against his shoulder.

"Shh," said Jeremiah, a hand sliding to rest against Sevik's head and smooth through his hair. There was a part of him that wondered at the sorry--especially considering the potential nature of Sevik's nightmares--but it did not matter. Moments like this were rare but only because there was not anyone else that the other man would let see him like this. It was a moment of weakness, a time when everything was laid bare, and Jeremiah would ensure that Sevik made it through to the other side.

"Just focus on the beat of my heart," he said, voice soft. It was something in the here and now, a distraction from the past and otherwise that haunted Sevik. "On my emotions," added Jeremiah, who certainly did his best to broadcast calm love, care, and affection. Those were emotions were based in the here and now, not the past where surely Sevik's mind had taken him.

After all: when Jeremiah had his low moments, when the horrors of his own past and mistakes threatened to overwhelm, Sevik was there for them. He could do not less, though certainly, that was not the only reason he did so as he continued to run his fingers through Sevik's hair.

Considering how close they were and how much each of them knew about the other, Sevik wouldn’t be surprised if Jeremiah could guess at the content and cause of his nightmares with surprising accuracy. Jeremiah’s arms enveloped him even as he buried his face against his friend’s shoulder. Here in Jeremiah’s arms was one of the few places Sevik truly felt safe, like somehow everything really would be alright. He tried to do the same for Jeremiah and had done so not that long ago. They didn’t share the same powers, but they’d shared experiences and knew the other well enough to know what was needed at times like this.

Feeling Jeremiah’s hand on his hair and hearing Jeremiah’s soothing voice helped Sevik ground himself in reality instead of the nightmares. Feeling the affection and care radiating from him soothed the raw emotions coursing through Sevik. He wasn’t sure how long it took, but eventually he stopped trembling and the tears slowed. He took a few moments longer to just enjoy the feeling of being in Jeremiah’s arms with Jeremiah’s fingers stroked through his hair.

He pulled back after a long while. “Thank you.” He wiped away the rest of his tears with his hands. “Will you hold me for a while longer? Being in your arms always helps me calm down.”

After he laid back down and snuggled in against Jeremiah, Sevik thought back to the events of the day. “We suspected the Planetary Knights were working for the enemy, just like we were once, but I guess the full weight of what that meant didn’t really hit me until I heard the Saturn Knight talking earlier.” He felt a little silly, like a kid watching a horror movie he’d known would give him nightmares, and yet he’d watched it, anyway.

With all that had happened recently, Jeremiah could wager a guess as to the nature of Sevik's nightmares. Sometimes he still had nightmares about it himself, especially when his anxiety was high--the feeling of knowing all was lost as he was hunted down, that he was the last, that nothing he could do would save his brother-in-arms--but Sevik had always helped ease it and other ill nightmares and memories. (Nevermind the lingering guilt that he had, for all intents and purposes, returned the favor in this life.)

His fingers continued to smooth through Sevik's hair, still projecting calm assurance and love as he did so. When Sevik's head lifted, Jeremiah used that same hand to brush away some of the wetness on the other man's cheek. "You know thanks is not necessary," he replied, though it was clearly accepted all the same, "and you don't even need to ask." Of course, he would continue to hold Sevik.

Sometimes it was easier to sort through his own issues, his own anxieties when he was helping someone else. Jeremiah tended to hyper-focus on things whether he admitted it or not and moments like this let him look outside of himself, to focus on another and help them. That, in turn, led to him gaining some clarity about himself. None of which he was thinking about at the moment as he shifted, settling with his back against the headboard of the bed, Sevik laying against him, and Jeremiah's arm wrapped around him.

Despite the topic--Saturn Knight was a sore subject--Jeremiah's fingers threaded through Sevik's hair. "It is hard to put the comparisons aside when faced with confirmation of it. Just as the comparisons to our own actions cannot be missed either but," said Jeremiah, shifting so that Sevik's head was tucked under his chin and his face more-or-less against his neck, "just like us he now has the chance to work through that trauma and be stronger for it." Truthfully, Jeremiah was certain that the reason why he was not in the same position that Sevik was was that his frustration and anger currently outweighed the anxiety and past trauma.

There was a quiet pause, his thumb briefly tracing Sevik's ear as he worked through his own thoughts. "I suppose it won't hurt to say this but ..." His hand slid from Sevik's ear to his chin, briefly tilting his head upward so their eyes could meet. "What you did all those centuries ago? I have long since forgiven you much how you've forgiven me." Then, much as Sevik had done for him weeks ago, Jeremiah brushed his lips against the other man's forehead. It was not necessarily that those words needed saying but repeating them, in a moment like this, could help.

Part of Sevik’s comfort with Jeremiah came from their shared history. There was an unspoken understanding between all the Golden Kings. They were a team, and they shared the same experiences. They were there for each other through everything. But he’d always been closer to Jeremiah. He couldn’t quite put a name to it, but something between them had always just clicked. It was why he opened up to Jeremiah more than anyone else and why Sevik was so dedicated to being there to support Jeremiah, no matter what.

“I know, but…” Sevik knew he didn’t have to voice these things, even as Jeremiah helped wipe away his tears. Still, he had trouble asking for what he needed sometimes. It was easier with Jeremiah, so he felt like he should ask, even if he didn’t need to.

Sevik settled in against Jeremiah, his arm going around his companion as they held each other. With his nose buried in Jeremiah’s neck, it was impossible for Sevik to avoid inhaling Jeremiah’s scent. Sevik always felt at his most content when they were snuggled together like this. He almost regretted that he had to mention the Saturn Knight, given how he knew Jeremiah felt about the situation. Sevik also knew things weren’t exactly black and white and that no matter how much anger Jeremiah felt toward the knight, there would also be a certain amount of understanding that went with it. He refrained from commenting, as he didn’t want to push the matter and upset Jeremiah, especially when Jeremiah’s arms felt so nice around him.

Jeremiah’s words continued after a pause. Sevik had closed his eyes, but they opened when Jeremiah tilted his chin upward. Forgiveness seemed to be a recurring theme lately. Cynthia said she’d forgiven him, along with the other kings, and now Jeremiah said it as well before brushing a kiss against his forehead. “Thank you.” He knew others forgave him for the things he’d done, but he wasn’t sure he’d forgiven himself yet. Still, the reminder that he had been forgiven helped.

Sevik brought his hand up, placing it on Jeremiah’s cheek. He stretched up, intending to brush a tender kiss against Jeremiah’s cheek, partly as a sign of appreciation for everything Jeremiah was doing. He wasn’t sure if Jeremiah moved or if he’d aimed wrong, but instead of cheek, Sevik’s lips connected with Jeremiah’s lips.

When Sevik realized his mistake, he pulled back and looked up at Jeremiah with wide eyes. “I… I…” He wanted to say that he hadn’t meant to kiss Jeremiah like that, but he couldn’t quite get the words out. His brain instead focused on how he wanted to do it again. His cheeks heated at that realization.

"No buts," replied Jeremiah, "only acceptance and understanding." If he were less groggy, less entirely at ease, his response might have been more eloquent, more thought out, but this was Jeremiah at his most relaxed even with the delicate nature of the conversation at hand.

It would have been too easy to doze back off--and he might have were the situation different--but Jeremiah could tell that Sevik was practically shouting his thoughts. Not that that was literally true, only that the silver-haired man was well-versed in understanding the older man. While he could claim to be close to the other two Golden Kings, it had been Sevik, in this life and the previous, that he had always been the closest to.

They had become thick-as-thieves almost immediately, drawn together not only because of shared history but because they were--in a not so strange way--mirrors of one another. Yet even with all that in mind, Jeremiah had never really put a name to what they were, what their relationship actually was. It never struck him as odd that he easily shared his bed (and vice versa) with Sevik because it would have been odd if he had not.

Just as he thought nothing of sweet intimacies they traded; the brush of lips against a forehead or being held while working through difficult emotions. Jeremiah shifted easily when he felt Sevik's hand against his face, head dipping downward to meet him.

... except it was not a brush of lips against his forehead or even his cheek, just the soft press of lips against his. Jeremiah blinked owlishly, queerly bright blue-green eyes almost luminous in the darkness of the room, as his brain sputtered to a halt. He barely even registered Sevik's response, the stutter of his voice as he worked to apologize. Instead, Jeremiah was quickly reorganizing things in his mind, realigning how he looked at things before he let out a soft exhale.

When it truly settled within his brain that Sevik had kissed him, it was not his cheeks that flushed. That warmth found its place in the curve of his ears, turning them a faint pink as he tightened his grip on the other man. Jeremiah never really thought much about relationships, about sexuality, about any of that beyond that he knew his own proclivities (and the fact that duty came before all of them), but somehow ...

Somehow he had been entirely blind to the possibility that stretched out before. Rather: the possibility that was tucked against his side, face flushed and eyes wide. Jeremiah's hand still rested against Sevik's face--thumb brushing against the flushed skin--as he studied the other intently. Empathy, at least the magical kind, was not something he had but Jeremiah was an expert at reading Sevik and he knew that look on his face.

"Sevik," said Jeremiah, voice pitched warm and low, "if you try and say I'm sorry, we are going to have words." This time the silver-haired man drew him closer once more but instead of guiding him in for another sweet, chaste kiss on the forehead, it was something more intimate as Jeremiah's lips hovered near Sevik's and their breath mingled.

"Kiss me again," he said, voice still pitched low but with an intensity that implied the words were both a request and a command. The moment that Sevik shifted, moved to do as asked of him, Jeremiah would act in kind. Unlike before, he was not caught off guard--the kiss was expected--and Jeremiah pressed into the kiss, fingers sliding from Sevik's cheek to thread once more in his hair.

Sevik smiled at Jeremiah’s comment about only acceptance and understanding. He was close to his entire team, but he’d always been closer to Jeremiah. He often explained to himself that they understood each other better because of the similarities in their powers, but whether he admitted it, there’d always been more to their connection. In some ways, he shared more in common with Nasir power-wise than he did with Jeremiah, yet his relationship with Nasir wasn’t anywhere close to what he shared with Jeremiah, so no matter how he rationalized it to himself, there was far more between them.

With Jeremiah, there had always been a deeper level of unconditional acceptance and affection than there’d been between him and the other two Golden Kings. They’d passed several boundaries that usually separated when two people were friends rather than something more, so it wasn’t surprising that there’d been many rumors and assumptions about them having been more than friends. Sevik had long ago convinced himself those boundary crosses meant nothing, but after having accidentally kissed Jeremiah and realizing he wanted to kiss him more, his mind seemed keen on showing him all the little lies that he’d been content to tell himself in the past.

By far, the hardest part was waiting for Jeremiah’s reaction. Sevik could feel the surprise radiating from the man as plainly as it was written on his face. It took a moment to process, but Sevik noted the way Jeremiah’s surprise melted into astonishment with perhaps a touch of amusement mixed in. Still, Sevik held his breath as he waited for Jeremiah to say something, since his own brain seemed incapable of finding words. There was an apology there, but was he apologizing for the kiss? Was he apologizing for the suddenness of it? Was he apologizing for the context? Clearly, this required more reflection later on when his higher reasoning wasn’t clouded by nightmares and sleep.

His mouth abruptly snapped shut when Jeremiah informed him that they’d have words if he apologized. He thought they should have words, that they should talk about what happened, but that train of thought was quickly derailed as Jeremiah’s head dipped down closer and their breath mingled. Sevik held his breath as Jeremiah instructed Sevik to kiss him again. At first, Sevik thought he was suffering from an auditory hallucination, but Jeremiah remained where he was, with their lips less than an inch apart. He’d expected for Jeremiah to pull away or ask him to leave, but this wasn’t either option.

It took another moment to process in Sevik’s mind that Jeremiah wanted to kiss him and when it did, Sevik did his best to savor the moment. He licked his lips and took in Jeremiah’s face. He’d always thought Jeremiah was handsome in an aesthetically pleasing kind of way, even if he never exactly understood when people talked about certain people being hot or sexy. But he thought Jeremiah looked especially nice at this moment. There was a certain level of intimacy in being able to see someone with their sleep tousled hair and half asleep reactions.

When Sevik finally shifted to kiss Jeremiah, it was slow, and every movement was deliberate. The kiss itself was tender and full of all the affection he could muster. Even though he knew Jeremiah couldn’t feel the emotions with his powers, maybe he’d still be able to feel it through the kiss. He shivered when Jeremiah’s fingers slid into his hair. When he finally pulled back from the kiss, Sevik just looked at Jeremiah for a moment, the corners of his mouth curved upward slightly. “How is it that we’ve avoided doing that for so long?” He asked.

There had always been rumors, even comments made, but Jeremiah had pushed them aside because the relationship--the connection between Sevik and himself--was viewed as a fact of life. It had never crossed his mind that it was something more but now, as he thought on it, he could see how he had deliberately blinded himself. After all: Jeremiah had struggled with romantic (or sexual) attachment because it just could not take hold without a strong emotional connection. Combine that with the fact that duty was always a the forefront of his mind ...

It made sense that he had blinded himself even if, in hindsight, he recognized how foolish and stupid he had been. Sevik, he knew, was working through similar thought processes. Yet all Jeremiah thought of--before Sevik kissed him again as he had bid him do--was how terribly handsome he was. How had he missed that? It was not hard to do, he supposed, given that physical attractiveness did not factor into his thought process, but ...

Here, in the privacy of his (their?) bedroom, there was no denying that Sevik's tousled hair and flushed cheeks made his breath catch. He liked the way that the other looked at him now, bright blue-green eyes flicking as Sevik wet his lips with his tongue. That made a different sort of smile grace his face but it was lost to the press of Sevik's lips against his and Jeremiah returning the kiss with gentle fervor. There was no need for magical empathy to know and feel all the affection and more that Sevik put into the kiss. More than that: it was returned in full, Jeremiah briefly chasing the other for another quick chain of smaller, sweeter kisses when Sevik broke it.

His fingers stayed in Sevik's hair, brushing through before cupping the back of his head and bringing him a little bit forward. Not necessarily to kiss again--at least for the moment--but so that their foreheads were touching. Jeremiah's ears were no longer tipped pink so much as they were red from both the kisses and the emotional realization.

"... have you met either of us?" replied Jeremiah, the corner of his mouth quirked upward in amusement. "Duty this, duty that, and never mind that I don't think either of us fall within typical spectrums when it comes to romance." A polite way to say that their romantic overtures and sexuality required more than simple and base attraction.

A question was on the tip of his tongue but for the moment it stayed unasked as Jeremiah continued to run his fingers through Sevik's hair (his own was in a loose braid, heavily tousled, and more than a few strands had fallen free). He watched the older man with a particularly intent gaze, once more trying to search out an answer without words. There was no change in his emotions, albeit they were more focused upon Sevik and the love, care, and affection he had for him.

"If I had realized," said Jeremiah, "I think I would've kissed you sooner." There was a pause. "In either life." That was not the question that he was still working through but a point to be made, especially as Jeremiah recognized just how much he did love Sevik (and why that had always made things particularly intense where the two of them were involved).

Sevik stopped paying attention to the whispers and rumors about him and Jeremiah a long time ago. They never bothered Jeremiah, so why should they bother him either? It’s not like he was opposed to things heading in that direction. He’d always found Jeremiah to be quite aesthetically pleasing and there wasn’t anyone else he’d formed a strong emotionally intimate relationship with. He knew he was different when he’d been younger and hadn’t thought someone’s physical appearance was enough to base an entire relationship on. It wasn’t until he was older that he had the language to explore and express the fact that he wasn’t sexually attracted to anyone.

Romantic connections were something he entirely understood if he were being completely honest and he’d never considered the relationship he had with Jeremiah to be a romantic one. But why not? They were partners in pretty much every other sense, so why couldn’t that extend to romance as well?

The way Jeremiah returned the kiss with the same level of tenderness, it made Sevik’s heart soar in ways he hadn’t realized it could. It seemed quite clear now that there was far more between them than just friendship as they’d always claimed. He loved the way Jeremiah’s fingers felt running through his hair and even though this was not the first time their foreheads touched, it certainly felt more intimate than normal.

He chuckled at Jeremiah’s response. “Touche.” He grinned. They’d need to have a conversation at some point about preferences and limits, but now probably wasn’t the best time for that conversation. They were both still processing. There were a lot of things they’d need to talk about and figure out, but for now, Sevik was stuck on the part where Jeremiah obviously felt similarly. Instead of the kiss messing up the closest friendship he’d ever known, it managed to bring them closer.

“I’m glad for that,” Sevik said when Jeremiah said he’d have kissed Sevik sooner in either life if he’d realized how he felt. “I’m having a hard time remembering a time when I wasn’t in love with you. It feels like it was so long ago, in both lifetimes. I knew what I felt was strong, but I feel a little dumb that it took me this long to realize what it was.” They’d always just called themselves friends and since sex didn’t factor into any of it, he never felt a need to explore anything deeper. At least not until he accidentally kissed Jeremiah only moments ago.

If nothing else, the realization that they both had the same intense feelings for the other had completely chased away any residual thoughts of his nightmare. He stroked Jeremiah’s cheek again before brushing some loose hair out of Jeremiah’s face and gently tucking it behind his ear. Sevik probably would have enjoyed running his fingers through Jeremiah’s hair if it weren’t pulled back in a braid. He stretched upward and captured Jeremiah’s lips once more. This kiss wasn’t as intense or as long, but now that he knew how much he liked kissing Jeremiah and that Jeremiah liked kissing him, he wanted more kisses.
